How To Write A Top-Grade Term Paper: Tips & Examples

From reading the syllabus to narrowing down a topic, there are several tips that can make paper writing a little easier. The students with the best grades are not the most intelligent; they just know the best ways to complete their work. To get the top score in the class, students should use these tips.

  • Read Through the Syllabus
  • Within the syllabus, professors normally list upcoming papers and formatting requirements. Likewise, they may write out the prompt. The best students will look for this information on the first day of the semester. By doing this, they get the entire semester to work on the term paper.

  • Look Through the Textbook
  • The final essay will normally be about something that was learned in class. If students cannot get a good idea for a topic, they can always start by reading through their textbook. The assigned books may help to spark an idea or be a source of brainstorming material. At the very least, the textbook will be a source of research for the project.

  • Choosing the Right Topic
  • Before researching a topic in-depth, students should make sure that they have found the right one. An overly broad subject or a confusing thesis will only waste the students time. Likewise, the topic should interest the student. If the students is not engaged in the topic, it will make researching and writing the paper much harder.

  • Create an Outline
  • Although it takes more time initially, having an outline will ultimately save time for the student. This document will clearly organize the development of the argument. Students can take notes on data or quotes that they want to incorporate within each paragraph. For the best quality of writing, an outline is a necessity.

  • Research Extensively
  • The library is a student's best friend. Within this structure, students will find everything that they need to write their paper. By spending long hours within the library, students can find interesting sources for their paper. The librarians are also an excellent source of information. They may be able to direct the student to old newspaper or ancient scholarly essays that can be used as the student's primary sources.

  • Remember the Rule of Thumb
  • Sources and information are the most important parts of a research paper. As a general guideline, students should have 10 to 15 sources for every ten pages of their paper. This works out to about one to three references for every page. While some papers have more than that, a good essay will have at least one source per page.
